Mayor Ford grilled on Jimmy Kimmel Live

BT Toronto | posted Tuesday, Mar 4th, 2014

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel prodded Mayor Rob Ford to seek help for his excessive drinking during an awkward, at times cringe-worthy appearance on Kimmel’s show on Monday night.

“If you are an alcoholic, if you’re drinking enough that you tried crack in your 40s and you don’t remember it, maybe that’s something you might want to think about, like talking to someone about it,” Kimmel said.

Ford, decked out in an all-black suit and bright red tie, threw his head back and laughed before saying he “wasn’t elected to be perfect.”

“I was elected to clean up the mess that I inherited and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

“I’m just a normal, average, hard-working politician that’s real…”

Kimmel quickly quipped, “You are not the average politician my friend.”

Despite claims that he travelled to Los Angeles to be an ambassador for Hollywood North, Ford spoke little about films during the appearance.

But he did rehash some familiar territory.

He bashed the local Toronto media for its incessant hounding, took angry pokes at police chief Bill Blair and city councillors, and hammered home his “taxpayers-first” policy whenever Kimmel momentarily relented the virtual roasting.

Kimmel kicked things off asking what many Torontonians were likely already thinking; “Why are you here? What good could come of this? Have you ever seen my show?”

Kimmel proceeded to ready angry messages from viewers, many from Toronto, while Ford’s face began to match the crimson hue of his tie.

“I’m really disappointed you are giving this abusive exploiter the time of day,” Kimmel read.

“Do you know about Rob Ford’s domestic abuse, drunk driving, racism, homophobia and inability to tell the truth?”

Ford, sweat now rolling down his forehead, asked, “Is that all I got?”

“I guess they don’t talk about all the money I’ve saved. How we straightened out the city.”

A little later, Kimmel had Ford stand and watch a series of his most notorious, and embarrassing, moments caught on tape. They included Ford’s infamous Steak Queen rant and the video where a clearly agitated Ford threatens someone.

When asked who he was threatening, Ford said he didn’t know.

“You have that many enemies that you don’t know which one this was?” Kimmel asked.

The Great Gonzo was the next guest.

He too poked fun at Ford, who by now was hightailing it back home to more familiar, and seemingly safer territory.

YEA LIKE ROB FORD IS THE ONLY POLITICIAN THAT HAS EVER LIED, or person for that matter. No one is perfect…look into your own mirror. He’s got guts and he’s not a quitter, good qualities in my book.

  • Linda Bentley says:

Rob Ford is a good person. Has nobody ever made mistakes in their lives?
I personally think this is getting ridiculous. Rob Ford is a brave man. Nobody else would do what he has done. He doesn’t hide with his tail between his legs. I think the people in City Hall need to get a life. Your all getting on my nerves and I’m tired of the comments. Rob Ford has done a great job. Sure he has made mistakes. Can’t you people maybe move on and find another person to talk about. Do we really have to listen to all this until October? Maybe society can’t forget what he did, but surely we can forgive. Give him a chance. We all learn from our mistakes. You have my vote.

Many people like to point the wrong doing of Mayor Ford, but he has done a lot good to this city as well…stop pointing fingers and look at your own self if he wasn’t our mayor no one would care for what he does on his own private time…while he is in office I think it is what count…he has been a great mayor to this city and that is what I see…as soon as they striped from power, taxes when up and increase on TTC why… why the taxpayer are the ones always affected, he stopped the rich from getting richer and that is what is bothering too many…he is the mayor of the poor and middle class, what he does in his own time is his own business….Leave the men alone and let him do his job. Mr. Ford you have been a great Mayor to our city of Toronto. You got my vote if you run again….Thank you.

  • Jane says:

Certainly hope Ford knows NO ONE is on his side and was only on this show to be poked fun at!!!!! End this circus now!!!!

  • Toronto Tax Payer says:

I think Jimmy Kimmel did a good job at the interview. Kept it light but spoke the truth.
But that didn’t change the lies, lies, lies coming out of Rob Ford’s mouth.
Save the city $1B? Not if you count all the money that got spent in the process of trying to SAVE that money. Like immediately scrapping the fully funded Transit City plan the moment he came into office, causing SEVERAL YEARS delay of the Scarborough transit re-building in favour of a subway line with only 3 stops that will alone cost $1B MORE then the previous Transit City plan, and at direct expense to tax payers. I hope “Ford Nation” out in Scarborough is happy with the mayor THEY elected, as they stand at the bus stop and FREEZE waiting for over crowded buses that either don’t show because there’s no enough, or won’t stop because they’re FULL, only to travel to an aging LRT station that won’t last much longer either, which, would have been replaced already if Transit City hadn’t been scraped!!! Meanwhile, your MULTI-MILLIONAIRE mayor this so called “Ford Nation” elected drinks to debauchery, smokes crack cocaine, and now is partying like a celebrity down in LA, all the while there’s work we PAY him to do right here at home at Toronto City Hall. An honorable mention goes to his jabs at the police chief in this Jimmy Kimmel clip wasting millions of dollars surveilling Rob Ford during Project Traveller, which BTW JIMMY KIMMEL, resulted in 43 arrests, the seizure of millions of dollars worth of illegal drugs as well as substantial cash and gun seizures, all the while Rob Ford is proven to be at the epicentre of it all, shown spending a “little too much time” hanging out with some of these so called “friends” who got arrested. But that’s okay because he wasn’t actually arrested yet, and despite him saying that “he doesn’t throw his friends under the bus”, he sure seems to have left his friend Alejandro Lissi who was one of the 43 arrested out in the cold while being arrested as Rob’s personal drug dealer, waiting for the bus, just like Ford Nation out in Scarborough.
The man is nothing but a buffoon, a clown complete with red tie. Yes fellow tax payers, vote carefully on Oct. 27th.

  • Jess says:

he took this roast like a champ and has done a lot of good things for our city. He just needs to learn that as a mayor, you do not get personal time unless your in the confines of your home. Anything you do outside of your home, you will be judged on and if it’s illegal, you should be charged on it no matter who you are.

  • Roger Kemp says:

Why is it that again they play the dirt on Rob Ford, but they didn’t show what Jimmy Kimmel said how he felt about him, after meeting him and saying what a great person he thought he was. Once again bias coverage of him,
its true what they say ! be careful when talking to the press because they will make you look bad and distort the story. thought it was a good interview
and everything he said was true ! give it a rest enough already..

  • Joy Callicott says:

Now that I’ve seen the video it doesn’t seem as bad as the articles I read about Ford being on the show. I thought Kemmel was respectful while still gets laughs. It could have been worse. Toronto if you guys re-elect him you deserve him.

  • Gaynor Jones says:

I love Rob Ford. He’s such a fun, personable guy. He’s done his darn job as Mayor, give him a break. You think he’s bad, go see our Mayor

  • Bre Burey says:

Loved it wtg Mayor Rob Ford… excellent but would like to see the police payback all that money they used and now brushed under the rug after all they are only a funded agency and do what they want when they want and coverup what they need, money is based on how many lives they can destroy like other government FUNDED agencies….
