So, you have a car. Well, good for you. But, don’t get revved up just yet, especially if you live in Toronto.

The cost of having a car in the city can add up – from parking, to gas, and of course, insurance. But, where you live in the city can make a big difference in premiums, and in some cases almost a 50 per cent difference.

In order to determine the 10 most expensive and 10 cheapest neighbourhoods for car insurance,Kanetix.ca, which compares insurance, mortgages and credit card rates, looked at auto insurance rates according to postal codes and found an almost a $1,000 difference for the same type of driver.

The report finds drivers who live in parts of North York pay 48 per cent more for car insurance than their counterparts in the Christie neighbourhood, which is located closer to downtown Toronto.

According to Kanetix.ca, North York is the most expensive neighbourhood in Toronto to insure a car, pegged at between $2,157 and $2,422, while Christie is the least expensive at $1,479.

The top three most expensive areas were in the Downsview area of North York, Albion in Etobicoke and Upper Rouge in Scarborough. The cheapest neighborhoods for insurance are downtown in the Christie area, and Forest Hill North and Davisville North.

“When we looked at the top 10 most expensive, two of the top four have the most collision-prone intersections in the city. So, you can see the relation there between where you live and where accidents typically happen,” Janine White, a vice-president at Kanetix, told 680 NEWS.

Although where you live can have an impact on auto insurance rates, White said there are other factors to consider.

“Your personal driving record has the largest influence on your premiums. … Tickets, collisions and claims can increase your insurance rates dramatically,” White said in a release.

White also said other factors that contribute to the cost of auto insurance include whether car thefts are prone in your area, the type of vehicle you drive, the time of day you drive and where you drive to.

Steep insurance rates are not just problematic in Toronto, but across the province as well.

Earlier this year, a report from the York University Schulich School of Business suggests Ontario drivers “pay far too much” for car insurance.

According to the report, “in 2013 alone, consumers likely overpaid by $840 million.

In 2014, the Liberal government passed legislation aimed at reducing car insurance premiums by 15 per cent on average by August of this year.
