Bundle up for a frigid Friday in the GTA

NEWS STAFF | posted Friday, Jan 11th, 2019

Winter is not even a month old yet and already Friday is the coldest morning of the season so far in the GTA.

As of 5 a.m. the temperature was -13.7 C but with the blistering windchill it felt like -24 C.

The last time the GTA was in the deep freeze was back in autumn, when the temperature was at -13.3 C with a windchill of -22 on Nov. 22.

Toronto still remains under an extreme cold weather alert, which was issued by the city on Thursday.

During the alert, the city activates local services, which includes extra street outreach for the homeless and the opening of warming centres.

The warming centre at Metro Hall will remain open until noon on the day when the alert is terminated.

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said the windchill will improve to -13 by Friday afternoon as the temperature climbs to -5 C. The low-teen windchill values will continue into the overnight hours.

The good news is that the icy cold weather will relax somewhat this weekend. CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine says the temperature will be -5 C on both days with sunshine on Sunday.
