Some flooding after heavy rain, thunderstorms hit GTA overnight

News Staff | posted Tuesday, Jun 25th, 2019

Heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through the GTA overnight, causing flooding in some areas.

Ahead of the weather, Environment Canada (EC) issued a special weather statement for the Greater Toronto Area including the City of Toronto.

The government agency said thunderstorms were expected to develop late Sunday evening and continue into Monday night, with as much as 44 millimetres of rain possibly falling.

The statement ended for the GTA just before 4:30 a.m.

The blast of wet weather caused pooling on parts of Highway 401 and Lake Shore Boulevard. The Simcoe underpass is also flooded with the southbound lanes closed south of Front Street to Bremner Boulevard.

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority also issued a flood outlook message saying all shorelines, rivers and streams in the area should be considered hazardous.
