An eight-year-old boy is recovering after he was attacked by an animal believed to be a coyote while riding his bike in East York last week.

Toronto police say the boy was riding his bike in the area of Thorncliffe Park Drive on June 19 when he was attacked by the animal, suffering bite wounds to his elbow and leg.

The animal was reportedly salivating and foaming at the mouth during the incident, so the boy was given the rabies vaccination.

He has not shown any signs of rabies and there have been no confirmed cases in Toronto.

Police are reminding residents to contact the Ministry of Natural Resources if they see wildlife acting strangely or showing possible signs of rabies.

Homeowners should also be keeping any food sources on their property or accessible garbage.

Crime Stoppers offering $50,000 for information leading to arrest of alleged playground shooter

More than a year after two young girls were shot at a Scarborough playground, police and Crime Stoppers are offering up a reward for $50,000 for information about one of the alleged playground shooter’s location.

On June 14, 2018, two sisters, aged five and nine, were injured when shots rang out at a playground at Alton Towers Circle, near McCowan Road and McNicoll Avenue.

The incident sparked outrage across the city.

Investigators believe the intended victim was in the park at the time with his child but fled the scene once the shooting began.

Police estimate there were about 11 children playing in the park at the time of the shooting and believe as many as 10 shots were fired.

Two arrests have been made in connection with the incident, but police say the primary suspect is still on the loose.

T’Quan Robertson, 23, is wanted for attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

TPS Deputy Chief Peter Yuen said “We are not looking for witness or people to testify. This case is ready to go to trial, we are just looking for the location of suspect.”

Yuen said he’s very confident someone in the community knows where Robertson is. He also added anyone helping Robertson could be charged with accessory after the fact.

Bolo Program Director Maxime Langlois says they will be amplifying the wanted notice. The group does not investigate or take tips, but use social media and billboard advertisements to get the message out. Anyone who wants to submit information can contact Crime Stoppers.

Yuen reiterated a message from the victims’ family and from Toronto police: “Mr. Robertson, there is nowhere to go. We will apprehend you sooner or later. Do the right thing. Call a lawyer and turn yourself in.”

The reward will be available until Dec. 25.

 

Hayley Wickenheiser 1 of 6 going into Hockey Hall of Fame

Longtime Canadian women’s team star Hayley Wickenheiser is one of six new members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Wickenheiser joins fellow Canadian Guy Carbonneau in the player category, along with Czech forward Vaclav Nedomansky and Russian defenceman Sergei Zubov.

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford, a native of Beeton, Ont., and Boston College head coach Jerry York were selected in the builder category.

The selections were announced Tuesday, with the induction ceremony to take place in November.

Wickenheiser retired as the country’s all-time leading scorer after 23 years on the national team. She now works as the assistant director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 40-year-old native of Shaunavon, Sask., was one of the top players on four Olympic champion Canadian women’s teams.

Carbonneau, a native of Sept-Iles, Que., was the last captain of a Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup, doing so with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

“This is an honour you think about, but it’s never a sure thing,” Carbonneau said in a statement. “It is an incredible recognition and I thank the selection committee.”

Rutherford began his management career with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires in 1984. He went on to be general manager of the Hartford Whalers for 20 years and won a Stanley Cup in Carolina in 2006 after the franchise moved.

Rutherford has won two more Stanley Cups with the Penguins.

“I started my career in Beeton, 50 miles north of the Hall of Fame, never dreaming that I would once be in it,” said Rutherford. “I’ve travelled lots of miles in hockey and met so many great people along the way.”

Police search for evidence on trail in Aurora following sexual assault on teen

The search continues for evidence along a trail in Aurora after a young teenage girl was sexually assaulted Monday.

The search is taking place on the Holland River Valley Trail — an area York regional police describe as heavily wooded, with several bushes and trees to navigate.

The trail is frequently used by people in the area and is close to several businesses and homes; the most notable landmark being City Hall in Aurora.

Const. Andy Pattenden said a full team is out for Tuesday’s search.

“We have officers with our search-and-rescue unit out there conducting an evidence search in the area, on the trails in that area, as well, investigators with our special victims unit, sexual assault section, are out there canvassing for any more witnesses, (and) any video that may be in the area,” he explained.

Pattenden also said the suspect was possibly armed with a gun. Police say he has light brown skin, a thin build and is in his mid 20s. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and a red baseball hat.

The victim was walking in the wooded area of the parks in the area of John West Way and Wellington Road around 2 p.m. on Monday when she was sexually assaulted by a male suspect, police say.

 

TCH special constable wanted on rape charges caught at Atlanta airport

A special constable for Toronto Community Housing suspected of raping a woman in West Virginia has been caught at the Atlanta airport.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports 34-year-old Jordan Anthony Doswell was identified as a fugitive Sunday and arrested by Atlanta police at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office says Doswell broke into a woman’s home in Huntington, West Virginia in September and raped her.

Toronto Community Housing confirmed to CityNews that Doswell is a special constable in the Community Safety Unit for Toronto Community Housing (TCH).

TCH released a statement, saying they take this matter very seriously. “We are still gathering the facts and as this is a matter before the courts.”

Doswell remains in the Clayton County Jail awaiting extradition to West Virginia.

Some flooding after heavy rain, thunderstorms hit GTA overnight

Heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through the GTA overnight, causing flooding in some areas.

Ahead of the weather, Environment Canada (EC) issued a special weather statement for the Greater Toronto Area including the City of Toronto.

The government agency said thunderstorms were expected to develop late Sunday evening and continue into Monday night, with as much as 44 millimetres of rain possibly falling.

The statement ended for the GTA just before 4:30 a.m.

The blast of wet weather caused pooling on parts of Highway 401 and Lake Shore Boulevard. The Simcoe underpass is also flooded with the southbound lanes closed south of Front Street to Bremner Boulevard.

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority also issued a flood outlook message saying all shorelines, rivers and streams in the area should be considered hazardous.

Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques returns to Earth

David Saint-Jacques returned to Earth on Monday after more than six months aboard the International Space Station. The native of Saint-Lambert, Que., has set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a Canadian at 204 days.

He was among three astronauts that safely returned to Earth after spending more than six months aboard the International Space Station.

The Soyuz capsule with the astronauts from Canada, Russia and the United States landed in the steppes of Kazakhstan at 8:47 a.m. (02:47 GMT), less than a minute ahead of the scheduled time, after a 3 1/2 hour flight from the orbiting lab.

Two of the astronauts had completed their maiden flights: Anne McClain of the United States and Saint-Jacques.

The expedition commander Oleg Kononenko of Russia has ended his fourth space mission.

All three spent 204 days in space.

Americans Nick Hague and Christina Koch and Russia’s Alexey Ovchinin remain aboard the space station.
