6 Movies Coming in the 2nd Half of 2019 To Watch For

Riley Glenn | posted Tuesday, Jul 23rd, 2019

2019 has been a great year for moviegoers. With blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4, John Wick: Chapter 3, Rocketman, and the freshly released Lion King remake, the first half of 2019 has not disappointed. There has been something for just about everyone, from superhero epics to pure action, freaky horror hits, comedy gold, and some incredible animated features.

After such an incredible start to the year, will the second half of 2019 be able to keep the movie momentum going? Only time will tell, but for now, let’s take a look at 5 movies we just can’t wait for.

  1. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (July 26, 2019)

Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film, set in 1960’s Hollywood, features an absolutely stacked cast. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Al Pachino are just a few of the names that make up the talented group of stars. If you are familiar with Tarantino’s work, films including Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill (2003), and most recently, The Hateful Eight (2015), then you have a general idea of what to expect. Over the top characters, a twisting and turning plot, and of course, violence.

  1. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (August 2, 2019)

The Fast and Furious franchise has been churning out blockbuster hit after blockbuster hit for nearly 20 years, with each film becoming more and moreover the top than the last. Hobbs & Shaw, a spinoff of the main series, follows you guessed it, Hobbs & Shaw, played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. The duo has appeared in the past 3 Fast & Furious films, and each has a deep history of iconic action films. Expect this one to be furiously packed with action.

  1. It Chapter Two (September 6, 2019)

When It hit theatres back in 2017, it became an instant classic. The adaptation of Stephen King’s novel was a near-perfect combination of humour and horror, It had us laughing at times, but mostly covering our eyes throughout the entire 2+ hour runtime. It Chapter Two returns to the town of Derry 27 years after The Loser Club’s first encounter with Pennywise. Starring Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live), Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), and James McAvoy (Split), It Chapter Two is guaranteed to be one of the spookiest movies of the year.

  1. Joker (October 4, 2019)

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Joker takes a look at the origin of the titular character. More psychological thriller than superhero flick, Joker follows the evolution of failed stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck and his descent into madness and ultimate transformation into criminal mastermind The Joker. We’ve seen a few iterations of the Joker in recent years, starting with Heath Ledger’s legendary performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight and Jared Leto’s in 2016’s Suicide Squad, but first impressions make it clear Joker will bring a brand new take on the iconic character.

  1. Frozen 2 (November 22, 2019)

Elsa, Anna, and their snowman companion Olaf are back for another adventure. So far, not much is known about the sequel, however, the trailer alludes to a dangerous journey across unknown lands. Even with the lack of information, this is one to keep on the radar.

  1. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (December 20, 2019)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was… let’s say… not as well received by die-hard fans of the franchise as Disney would have hoped. Still, we have faith in The Rise of Skywalker. The final chapter of the 9-episode Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker is destined to be an epic conclusion to one of the largest movie franchises in the history of cinema. Produced, co-written, and directed by J.J. Abrams, The Rise of Skywalker follows the battle between the Resistance and the First Order, all while the ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches its climax. As mentioned, this will be an epic conclusion.
