Toronto to receive $400M in provincial funding for the TTC

The TTC is about to get a boost from the provincial government as funding for municipalities across Ontario starts rolling out.

Premier Doug Ford announced Wednesday that the province will be giving up to $1.6 billion to municipalities to help them get through the financial challenges of COVID-19.

Toronto will receive $400 million — in the first phase of funding — for the TTC.

“All across Ontario, transit systems are facing lower ridership and additional costs due to COVID-19,” Kinga Surma, associate minister of transportation for the GTA, explained.

“This additional funding will keep municipal transit systems running and will help keep trains, buses, and stations safe so people can feel confident in choosing public transit as they go back to work.

It’s estimated that the TTC will be short $700 million by the end of the year.
