Did you know…  Bay is a 24-year-old British songwriter and wrote his hit song ‘Hold Back The River’ about the feeling of missing his friends and family and special moments with them because of his busy schedule.

Cab driver protest to target Friday evening rush: taxi rep

A representative for the taxi drivers planning to strike during the NBA All-Star weekend says their protest will target the evening rush hour on Friday.

“We stand firm on our grounds and we are going to stick to our original plan, and that is to go protest on [Friday],” Paul Sekhon, head of the newly formed United Taxi Workers Association of the GTA, told Breakfast Television on Wednesday.

Cabbies are hoping the protest will draw attention to the growing rift between UberX and licensed taxis.

He also said further details of the strike action will be announced around 11 a.m. at City Hall. Three councillors and nine taxi representatives will be speaking alongside Sekhon.

Sekhon said they have already received permits from police for their protest on Friday. He said the protesting cabbies will head down Highway 427, to the Gardiner Expressway, Bay and York ramps, Lake Shore Boulevard, and around the Air Canada Centre.

He said there’s only one thing that could happen to prevent the strike: “We want UberX to be banned in the City of Toronto, we want UberX to be shut down. There should be no UberX illegal services at all.”

Sekon said drivers want to make their voices loud and clear, and said those who take taxis “stand with us.”

“We believe doing this is the only way we are going to get our voices heard loud and clear at an international level,” he said.

Sekon said although full details will be released later Wednesday morning, he expects the taxis to start disrupting traffic around the evening rush hour.

Beck, one of the city’s largest taxi companies, is urging its drivers not to take part in the planned protest. President Gail Beck-Souter tells drivers that the protest is misguided, and it “would give Uber exactly what they want.”

Toronto cab drivers are upset that UberX drivers are not facing the same regulations and standards that they are.

The Workers Association was formed at a meeting on Sunday night. It is designed to protect all members of the taxi industry, from drivers all the way up to brokerages.

Organizers say that since city council voted to delay a possible injunction against UberX last week, cabbies are being forced to take matters into their own hands. The City of Toronto has also granted a taxi brokerage license to Uber, putting it on the same footing as regulated taxi companies Beck and Royal.

The Uber app can be used to summon licensed cab drivers. But another of the company’s services, UberX, connects passengers with private drivers, who use their own vehicles and do not have taxi licences.

The taxi industry argues that UberX is unregulated and its drivers don’t have commercial licences, putting passenger safety in jeopardy while simultaneously driving traditional cabbies out of business.

How to sleep easier without medication

A new study by the Canadian Pediatric Society says that 70 per cent of kids have trouble falling asleep and 30 per cent are being medicated by their parents.

Below are some tips to help your kids go to sleep without the use of harmful medication.

Sleep Tips for Kids

Canadian Pediatric Society makes the following recommendations on the amount of sleep needed:

  • Newborns (birth to 2 months): 16-18 hours per day, 
three to four hours at a time
  • Babies (2 to 6 months): 14-16 hours
  • Older babies (6 months to 1 year): 14 hours
  • Toddlers (1 to 3 years): 10-13 hours
  • Preschoolers (3 to 5 years): 10-12 hours
  • School-aged children (5-10 years): 10-12 hours

Common mistakes

  • Putting children to sleep somewhere and then moving them. This can cause children to wake up during the night.
  • Not having regular sleep routines: Children who have trouble sleeping often don’t have regular sleep routines.
  • Not sleeping by 9 p.m. The latest a child goes to bed is 9 p.m.
  • Bottles before bedtime: Children then associate feeding and sleeping and they end up waking themselves up in the middle of the night.

The Do’s & Don’ts

DON’T:  Ask – “How Many A’s Did You Get?”

This the is number-one question kids get asked on the day of report cards which is not helpful.  The focus is on achievement. Often, kids will internalize this as “My parents only love me if I achieve.” As a result, kids do two extremes: They either under-function (“I’ll never get the approval of my dad so why bother trying”) OR they over-achieve to win their parents approval. The challenge with over-achievers (they look great on paper and get into a lot of the top schools) – but they often struggle with low self-esteem, perfection, and anxiety because their self-worth is based on externals.

DO: Ask – “How Do You Feel About Your Report Card? OR

“If You Were Your Own Teacher – How Would You Grade Yourself Based On Your Effort?

Put the focus on character (self-discipline, motivation, asking for help, time management, organization). All of these “characteristics” and “habits” will highly influence their marks – and these behaviours are what kids can 100% control! Not only is it extremely empowering for your kids, but it also puts them all on the “same playing field” so regardless if you have one child that is gifted and one that has an LD… the goal and objective is effort, not mark!

DON’T: Compare To Their Siblings Or Other People

When parents compare siblings to each other (or others) its extremely disempowering and frustrating for kids!  Each child is different, unique and has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. If we compare – we are focusing on something they cannot control. In addition it often creates intense competition and jealousy between siblings.

DO: Get Them To Compare To Themselves!

The key to intrinsic motivation is to get the person to focus on what they can control (which is themselves). If they had a 68% in math – their goal could be a 73%. Get them to compare themselves to themselves. Get them to be their own evaluator. What worked this past term? What did not? What did they do well? What areas do they think they need to work on? By asking the questions (and getting them to answer it) … they are taking more responsibility for themselves and their learning!

Toronto barista with autism charms customers with dance moves

It’s a heartwarming story about a company doing the right thing and a young man making the most of an opportunity.

Sam is a Toronto teen living with autism and a movement disorder, and has had trouble finding a part-time job.

A local Starbucks stepped in and now the “dancing barista” is going viral.

The video was initially posted on YouTube and went viral thanks to Facebook.

Like many high school students, Sam was just looking for work. But unlike many students, his illness caused him to make sudden movements. However, it looked like dancing to manager Chris Ali, who took a chance on Sam. Ali quickly noticed his love of music and so did customers, one of whom posted the video.

It’s meant the world to Sam: After getting the job, he told his parents that his life had meaning.

Carry on, world: Twitter slowly resumes service after glitch

Twitter Inc. was only sporadically available to users on Tuesday, suffering technical problems that have lasted more than two hours.

The company, which has 320 million active users, tweeted that it is aware of the issue and is trying to fix it. The announcement was sent at 3:41 a.m. Eastern Time.

Users said the service was not accessible on desktop computers. Twitter’s blog posts, corporate info and most other pages on the Twitter.com website were also inaccessible, displaying the blue error screen.

Twitter’s mobile app was partially functioning for some users but its timeline updated new tweets sporadically. Its search function appeared disabled as some hashtags or keyword searches returned no results. Users’ profile pages appeared to be accessible from the mobile app.

Third party services, such as the TweetDeck service, also returned a blank page.

Twitter has suffered several service disruptions so far this year. On Monday, some users could not access Twitter on mobile and web for about 10 minutes. The service was disrupted on Friday for about 20 minutes.

How to beat the ‘Blue Monday’ blues

Monday is being dubbed the most depressing day of the year.

The third Monday of January is known as Blue Monday, which was initially a term that travel companies started using about a decade ago to promote sunny destinations in the middle of January.

It’s now more than a marketing tool: The term has seeped into popular culture and is used as a reminder to maintain good, mental and emotional health in the dead of winter

Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University, studied Blue Monday and found a few reasons for the phenomenon. The glow of Christmas has faded, yet you’re still paying for the festivities; New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside; and yes, the weather is terrible.

“It’s after the holidays, there’s nothing much going on for a little while and there’s little sunlight,” North Toronto Sleep Clinic’s James Sayegh explained.

Nicole McCance, a psychologist in Toronto, has a few strategies to deal with mental health issues this time of year, including getting sleep and staying social.

“The winter feels really long,” McCance said, so do a mental health check.

“Ask yourself, how am I feeling today?” Look for warning signs early, like lack of motivation and difficulty sleeping. Listen to her tips in the video above or click here to view it.
